CATCH
Details
Inspired by three ever-relevant texts and tunes from three different eras of our modern history, hidden and blurred; still, with moments of clarity of direct, fragmented, and varied quotations – the work delivers a reflection, reconciliation, and imploration for humane values. Yet, there's a CATCH . . . ~ Lukáš Janata The work trades in contradictions and extremes, quickly vacillating between very loud and very soft. The opening slow section features a theme stated by oboe and contrabassoon at opposite frequency ends, returning increasingly fragmented as the orchestra expands and contracts dynamically. Horns perform repeated glissandi, with the first two ascending nearly an octave, anticipating the fast section's vigorous angular melody in the strings. After moments of broadening, fragments of the opening theme emerge alongside a shimmering ostinato in winds and harp. The sustained intensity subsides to intermittent bursts before returning to the slower opening tempo. The first theme is restated as a short chorale in the strings, followed by a lengthy transition that echoes earlier fervor before seeking resolution in the coda. An ostinato between harps and celeste returns as the piece regains momentum. The coda begins with celeste joining violins over a viola melody, followed by a sluggish glissando in low strings. A final orchestral ascension recedes, leaving harp and celeste to gently conclude the piece. ~ Program Note by Samuel C. Nedel
